Rape is a strong word. Personally, I think it’s an ugly
word, but then that’s probably why it suits what it’s defining.
“Rape.” Even saying it out loud can make a person wince, so
you can imagine how horrified someone would be if they saw someone being raped. I mean, I don't know about you, but I am horrified daily from bearing witness to the rape happening now.
Every creature in this planet is a witness to this rape. They’ve watched something
sacred and ancient be plundered, despoiled, and violated. It's tragic and heartbreaking. Most of them feel helpless because they cannot do
anything. There is only one among all the creatures in this planet who can stop this crime.
But he won't.
Because he’s the one doing the raping.
Man, the one species gifted with the ability to dream of a
better world, is the fucking rapist.
What the fuck is wrong with us?
We saw the beauty of Mother Earth, the glistening of her
clear-watered oceans, the variant green hues in her thick forests, her clean
perfumed air, and we thought, like some alpha asshole from a historical romance in the eighties, “Mine!”
We ripped out the gifts of her cherished trees, we plundered
her with metal rods to greedily consume what other gifts she hid away
underneath her soil, and we’ve left her with open wounds, bleeding black into
her salty oceans.
And for years, we did
this, thinking that there were no repercussions. That surely it wouldn’t affect
us in our homes. That because there was no terrible consequence to doing awful
things to this place, nothing bad would touch us. That we were safe.
But we better run. She’s coming for us.
For just like any raped virgin, Mother Earth has turned
bitter and cruel. She might not speak using our words, but she has her own, and
her language is not subtle. She is dying and she is pissed. And even if it
means she’ll destroy herself in the process, she will
have her justice.
You can deny it all
you want, but look back at the tapes of destruction. From monsoons to
hurricanes to floods to drought… this planet has been trying to kill us with
purpose.
It is not normal for the weather to be 75 degrees in winter.
Nor is it normal for there to be rain every day in the South for the month of
June. It is not normal that planes in Arizona cannot fly because it’s too
fucking hot (112 Degrees). It is not normal for lakes to disappear overnight. Nor is it normal for the Earth to keep swallowing whole city blocks into unending sinkholes. And lastly, it is not fucking normal for starving polar bears to be
floating on small pieces of ice.
You can keep pretending to be blind because the Koch
brother’s paid you to deny climate change, but you know, deep down, that the
Earth has a soul. She speaks her love through flowers and her fury through weather. She has had enough of us taking from her. She was here before all our sorry asses infested her, and
she will be here long after we’ve all died because the climate eradicated us
into extinction.
Personally, I hope she gets her revenge.
